// INDES DESIGNS VOTE AID

In Wolfheze on Friday the 5th of February the first voting aid for blind people was presented. With this device they could vote on their own in the elections for City Council on March the 3rd.

The Ministry of the Interior gave in consultation with Visiris the mandate to Indes. The design of the universal voting aid was tested with multiple prototypes for comprehensiveness and applicability.

The voting aid consists of two plates which are placed between the standard ballot. The top plate has holes exactly aligned with the voting boxes. By first counting the columns and then the holes within that list, the desired candidate can be found. The red pencil can be inserted in the hole to check the voting box. Before the voting a telephone call can be made, so voters know where the candidate of his choice is positioned.

// A SUCCESSFUL YEAR FOR THE MOVANEXT E-BIKE CARRIER

2009 has proved to be a very successful year for MovaNext, the bicycle carrier of MultaNational Sales, Indes and Multa Assen. The carrier, which was designed especially for transporting e-bikes, was designed by Indes last year and is now being produced according to the Indes virtual factory principle. According to this principle, the product is developed by the Indes teams in the Netherlands (Enschede) and China (Ningbo), the parts are then produced in China, and the assembly and final testing are performed by Multa in Assen. The entire innovation, production and quality control process is directed and executed by Indes.

The Indes virtual factory consists of the Indes development team in the Netherlands and China, the team of Indes production specialists in the Netherlands and China, and a carefully built up network of preferred suppliers. In this way, the virtual factory ensures a compact and efficient development process that connects seamlessly with production. Indes’s production specialists in the Netherlands and China guarantee a high level of quality and reliable delivery times at very competitive cost prices and investments. Throughout the process our partners have only one point of contact: Indes.

// COMPETITIVE E-BIKE DEVELOPED FOR FLEXAIM

"This bike is going to eclipse all existing models. This is the Rolls-Royce of e-bikes, the cream of the crop in the sphere of electric bicycles."

These were the words Flexaim used to present their new product, a very sporty, light-weight electric bike, during Eurobike 2009 in Friedrichshafen.

Indes developed the bike’s e-kit and will be producing it for Flexaim. For this, a completely new technology has been developed, providing comfortable and smooth pedal support. An easy-to-use user interface with a distinctive design has also been developed. The new Flexaim bike is designed for a broad public from age 30 on and will be available from the spring of 2010.

// INDES RECEIVES ISO 9001 AND 13485 CERTIFICATION

Indes recently received its ISO 9001 and ISO 13485 certification. The ISO 13485 standard is the medical version of ISO 9001 and applies to companies that market medical aids in Europe and want to demonstrate that their products meet the statutory and customer requirements.

A system of quality standards based on ISO 13485 gives customers the assurance that processes are carried out according to established methodologies. If products require a CE mark, the appropriate Notified Body will commonly assess the organisation on the basis of this ISO 13485 standard. It assures customers of compliance with the requirements of the Medical Device Directive (93/42/EEG). In addition, certification in accordance with the 13485 ISO standard can open the door to international markets, as many organisations active in the field of medical aids employ this certification as a requirement.

Both the Indes site in Enschede and the one in Ningbo (China) are ISO 9001 and 13485 certified, which allows us to carry out the entire development and production process in accordance with the applicable standards.

// INDES SETS UP ITS OWN ASSEMBLY SITE IN CHINA

"‘After having set up our own development support centre in China in 2008, we will be adding our own assembly site in the beginning of 2010. Particularly for the more complex products, which involve the application of many different production techniques and which are not produced in large series, this makes it an attractive option to build not only parts but also complete (sub)assemblies in China."

A major advantage is that we can delegate the entire quality control process to our own people (from the Netherlands) in China. The parts come from specialist suppliers, mostly small to medium-sized Chinese companies that are good at what they do but have not yet established direct links with Europe. This means their cost level is favourable and also that they are still interested in medium-sized and small series. Our assembly site puts the parts together to form (sub)assemblies, enabling us to guarantee their quality for one hundred per cent before they leave China. And, as some of our clients point out, this also reduces the risk of one factory acquiring enough information to enable them to copy the product easily.

// THE INDES STORY

"Indes started out as a design agency, which evolved from the design department of a production company with a strong focus on the health care sector. This is what formed Indes and what attracted the people who now form Indes..." After over 20 years in business, Indes’s story, as told by the Indes story tellers inside and outside the company, has been written down.

Since 1988, Indes has developed from a design agency to a product company that excels at designing and producing people-oriented products. With its site in China, Indes offers its clients cost-efficient production and/or engineering possibilities. It is also Indes’s ambition to make that involvement in product development from start to finish visible and tangible in a brand of our own.

What possibilities does this hold for a valued, long-standing business relation like you? We would like to make an appointment with you in the near future to tell you the story.

// INDES WORKSHOP AT DESIGN FOR USABILITY EVENT

Ambitious Design for Usability Event in Delft.

The three Universities of Technology (Delft, Eindhoven and Twente) combined forces for this year’s World Usability Day on November 12. From 12 to 15 November they organized a four-day Usability Event in Delft.

The programme included a symposium, an exhibition and several workshops.
Indes contributed to the Event by giving a workshop on: ‘Managing Design for Usability in Practice’. According to the participants the workshop was a success, shedding light on the challenges and solutions that can be encountered when developing high-quality products that people can rely on. Participants from larger and smaller enterprises exchanged ideas on how to control the design for usability process.
